It's best to use a condom for the first month until your body gets adjusted to the hormones. Also, as the advertisements say, the pill does not protect against STD's, so unless you've both been checked for HIV and are in a steady monogamous relationship, it's probably wise to still use condoms. These days you can't always know about a person's sexual history, and because of it's long incubation period a person can have HIV and not know it for years.
I have had 2 kids on the pill. 1 kid was conceived because of medication I was on weakened the affect of the pill. The other one I have no idea. I may have been late a few times taking the pill. You have to also think about stds. You may not have any other partners, but you have no idea for 100% if he doesn't. Your health is not worth it. Even if he is not that type, you still have to so careful.
